ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES

The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago in South East Asia. The country is composed of 7,107 islands broadly categorized into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Manila, the capital city, is located in the southern part of Luzon. Blessed with rich natural resources, the country is also famous for its beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, and other wonders of nature. Among its top tourist destinations are the beaches of Boracay, El Nido and CamSur, the Tubbataha Reef in Palawan, the Banaue rice terraces, the island of Bohol with its unique flora and fauna, and the historic city of Cebu.

The Philippines is a vibrant democracy. Filipinos are known for inventing the People Power Revolution, the peaceful uprising that they waged in 1986 to topple a decades-old dictatorship and which became the inspiration of several political movements around the world.

Filipinos are a fun-loving and hospitable people. All throughout the year, one will find a colorful fiesta or festival happening somewhere. Having produced some of the best musicians and performers in the world, the Philippines is also known for its lively arts and culture scene.

Colonized by Spain, the United States, and Japan, the country has a rich culture combining both Eastern and Western influences. This blending of cultures is evident in its food, art forms, and language. This makes the country unique in the region – a place where East meets West.
